Turmeric: what do we really know?

Turmeric (also known as yellow root) comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and is widely used in Asian cuisines. What does it actually do in your body? We investigate what is known, apart from exaggerated claims.

What is turmeric?

Turmeric owes its bright yellow color to curcumin, a polyphenol that exhibits antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratories. However, the absorption of curcumin in the body is low; its bioavailability is below 1% without excipients such as black pepper (Source: NCBI).

What does research say?

Does curcumin have an effect on arthritis or joint pain?

There are indications that curcumin can provide relief for osteoarthritis. A systematic review from 2022 concluded that curcumin extract can reduce pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis, with an effect comparable to common painkillers, but with fewer side effects (Source: PMC, 2022).

Important detail: these effects were mainly seen with daily doses of 500 to 1500 mg of curcumin. This is a much higher concentration than you would get through ordinary food or a teaspoon of turmeric.

Can turmeric support liver function?

Some studies focus on liver health, especially in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). A meta-analysis from 2021 shows that curcumin supplements can improve liver enzyme levels in this group (Source: PMC, 2021). Again, this applied to concentrated supplements, not to turmeric as a spice.

What do we know about turmeric and brain function?

Preliminary studies suggest that curcumin could play a role in cognitive functions and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. However, the results are inconsistent and based on small studies or animal research (Source: Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2019). More and better research is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.

Are there risks associated with turmeric?

In most cases, turmeric is safe as a spice. However, there have been reports of liver damage after using curcumin supplements, especially when combined with piperine (black pepper), which enhances absorption. The Australian health authority TGA has issued a warning about this (Source: TGA, 2022).
